Curricular Drama

Drama is a highly popular subject at Farnborough Hill and is taught at Key Stage 3 as part of the curriculum through to GCSE and A level.

Year 7 students concentrate on storytelling skills and building practical understanding.  They explore the medium of presentation through mime, poetry, prose, and script extracts.

Year 8 students improve their physical skills by learning stage combat, developing voice and pushing the boundaries of physical theatre.

Year 9 are offered a foundation year to the GCSE course where pupils study the teachings of key practitioners in theatre such as Brecht and Stanislavski and work from a range of stimuli culminating in a piece of devised theatre. Voice work includes learning a monologue off by heart.

Years 10, 11 and Sixth Form students opt to study the OCR Drama courses at GCSE and A level which offers exciting opportunities to develop practical and creative skills..

Trinity Drama classes are offered to all pupils where they are prepared for graded examinations twice a year by a specialist teacher.

All pupils take part in performances as well as studying plays, playwrights and theatrical practitioners. Theatre companies and practitioners are regularly invited into school to work with the students who also enjoy the exciting opportunity of having the West End on the doorstep complemented by superb local theatres.

Farnborough Hill has excellent performance and teaching facilities. A recently refurbished black box theatre (Theatre on the Hill) seating 105, a black box studio performance and teaching space and the main school hall all with an extensive range of lighting and sound equipment. The hall accommodates a large audience for our popular musical productions.

Annual school productions are at the end of the Easter Term (Years 10 – 13) with Lower School (Years 7 – 9) and Upper School (Year 10 – 13). Pupils participate in all aspects of our productions not only taking on acting, singing and dancing roles but in learning stage management through costume, make-up, props, lighting and sound.
